Jain Calendar 2020 consists of festivals and fasts like Shri Mahavir Jayanti, Paryushan Parva Rambha, Diwali, Mahavir Nirvana and so on. Jain natives follow the preachings of Lord Mahavir, also known as Vardhamana, and practice good karma. It indicates maintaining good conduct, faith and knowledge.
The other sacred event in Jainism is Paryushan Parva Rambha, which is celebrated by Swetambara and Digambara for 8-10 days respectively. According to the beliefs, people performing the rituals attain Moksha and their level of spirituality increases while performing fasts and praying. The other big festival celebrated by Jains is Diwali. As per the beliefs, Lord Mahavir attained Moksha on that day. This is also considered as a start of a new year of Jains. Those who own their business also commence their financial year from this day itself according to their tradition. There are mostly four types of fasting popular in Jainism. Through Jain Calendar 2020 we have explained below the types of fasting for your better understanding:
In this type of fasting, you have to give up food and water completely for a particular time period. Time limit may vary from person to person. For example: Monks do that for more than a week or probably a week. This is the type of fasting in which person does not wish to come back to a normal life. This type of fasting is done in order to attain Moksha.
In general, Jains are pure vegetarian. It is a type of fasting, a person takes control over his taste buds. Person eats less than usual in order to get complete results. Jains avoid ginger-garlic, and onion while keeping this fast, give up their taste and start surviving only on essential things.
Vruti Sankshepa is the third type of fasting, in which consumption of items gets limited. A person gives up a particular food item for the rest of his/her life.
In this type of fasting, food items are also given up. However, the difference is only that you have to give up your favourite food item. The concept behind this type of fasting is minimizing the need of resources so that it can be used for the other betterment or for one who is needy. In today’s scenario, resources are minimum and animals are also not getting proper diet. Thus, by doing this fasting, we give our contribution to someone needy.
Jains are categorized in two ways: Svetambara and Digambara. The main difference between these two is understanding of scriptures and rituals. The way of worshipping may differ, however, the motive of fasting remains same.
