Public, as well as school Holidays, are declared as per the Indian Calendar 2020. Another name of this calendar is the Shalivahana Shaka Calendar. This calendar consists of 12 months similar to the Gregorian calendar but the list of holidays is definitely different.
This combined calendar for all religions is formed after considering all the government holidays and important days of Hindu Calendar. The 12 months of Hindu calendar are Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartika, Agrahayana, Pausha, Magha, Phalguna. These start around the 14th day of the month as per the Gregorian calendar, leading to difficulty in understanding. Hence, there was a need for a calendar that was universally used and portrayed the information useful to Indians as well.
Indian Calendar 2020 is also known as Indian Panchang or Panchangam. Traditional Panchang comprises of five limbs namely Tithi, Vaar, Yog, Karan and Nakshatra. Based on all these parameters, the important dates of these fasts and festivals are determined. These dates are, in turn, determined on the basis of relative motion of Moon. Few regions in India also follow the solar calendar which works on the relative motion of the Sun. Apart from this, Lunisolar calendar is also popular since it considers both the position of Sun and Moon and the dates are determined with the help of relative motion of both. The holidays mentioned in this calendar doesn’t belong to any specific religion or culture but to India as a whole.
Earlier, different sects or religions had their own specific calendar, since India was under British rule, the official calendar was the Gregorian calendar. For political unity of a nation, it was crucial to have one calendar that was officially accepted. Hence, the first Prime Minister of free India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru asked for a reformation in the calendar system. Gradually, after a lot of discussion and development, the current form of calendar was developed in the year 1957, by the Calendar Reform Committee.
The reason behind this creation of calendar was to set free the country from all the political and religious conflicts. It had all the important dates of festivals and popular events celebrated by the majority of Indian population. The best part of this calendar was its acceptance, it was accepted by all in India and is a symbol of secularism.
